Joy With the Moab Conversation

Joy with the Moab Conversation started out like  many of these do – – on a business appointment.  We were there to haul away some junk and in the process started a conversation with the customer.  Or more truthfully, she probably started it with us.

She talked about how she and her husband had taken their kids to the beach each year for 25 years. Then last year they decided to mix it up and try something new: a bicycling adventure in Moab, Utah.

Joy with the Moab Conversation centered on a family’s biking adventure in Moab, Utah.

She talked about how much fun it was. They also read up about Mormons and what the people were like. She commented how everybody was so nice and cordial.

The Mission Connection

Somehow we started talking about full-time missionaries as she has kids who are friends with LDS members. I talked about my mission at the age of 19 and how I was sent to Missouri.

Then she asked if my kids had served missions and I said yes, to Panama and Anaheim California.

Defending the Church

She talked about the research she had done about the Church and I had to correct some of the things she was saying. For example, she had read that Mormons would go into a new town in droves and pillage and steal things from other people.  Without hesitation, I told her that wasn’t true.

I made the point that any Christian or Jew who believed in the Old Testament also believed in polygamy.  I made the point that that practice was discontinued in 1890!  How ironic that it still pops up in the minds of the public!

Over the course of 20 minutes we had a constant conversation about the history of the Church.  It was the most in-depth conversation about our church history that I’ve had in many years with a first time customer.

The Prompting

Somewhere in the midst of it I got the prompting to give her an articles of faith card.  Quickly I grabbed one from my truck. I explained what it was and suggested she tests her church members knowledge a little bit by quizzing them on some of the articles. She loved that idea.

Articles of Faith cards

My favorite Articles of Faith Card-Jesus with children.

Giving her the card was the most natural thing in the world. It was timely, relevant, and simple.

When we got ready to leave I noticed another car parked on the street next to their driveway. It turns out I had met her husband years earlier on a business occasion when I interviewed him in his office briefly.  The car on the street was his.

The Joy

This is another perfect example of how the Lord drops people in your pathway.   You can then connect with them. Without the articles of faith cards at my quick disposal, this would not have turned out anywhere as successfully as it did.
