JOY WITH THE LYFT DRIVER

I flew to Detroit last Tuesday night to attend the Detroit Michigan Temple.   The good news is the round-trip airfare from Baltimore was only $77 on Spirit Airlines; the bad news is I had to wait until Wednesday night at 7 PM to actually attend the temple.

The World Series

I used the Experian app to find an inexpensive hotel close to the airport. It worked. The Wyndham Garden Hotel was only $77 for a night with a king bed.   That great purchase allowed me to settle in for the night and watch game six of the World Series between the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros.

I was thrilled when the Nationals won because it meant I could watch the last half of game seven tomorrow night after my temple trip…

Joy With The Lyft Driver

So on Wednesday afternoon around 5 o’clock I decided to take my first ride on Lyft. Their 25% off introductory offer was too good to pass up. Prior to this I was pretty much an Uber guy.

Just as with Uber, I only had to wait about four minutes before my Lyft driver arrived.   We will call her Alyson.

Alyson’s Background

I learned that Alyson had been driving for Lyft only five weeks. She typically works a 12 hour day, starting at 5:30 in the morning.   She really likes her job, which I thought was great!

Questions on the Way to the Detroit Michigan Temple

Detroit Michigan Temple

A beautiful temple!

Because we were going to the temple her questions were frequent and natural.  She commented how she always thought that Mormons were Amish.   I explained that we were not.   She asked what the purpose of a temple was. I told her.   She asked what you do inside of a temple. I explained the concept of proxy ordinances.

More important than anything else I asked her if she would like to come in the front door with me when we arrived.   She was stunned that she could do that but I reassured her that was true. She quickly got excited!

We Arrive at the Detroit Michigan Temple

Once we arrived I invited her to come in with me. I told her not to worry about how she was dressed: black sweat pants, black hoodie, and tennis shoes.

I admired her resolve to step inside. Once inside I explained what a recommend desk was and showed her how it worked. About eight temple workers gathered on the other side of the desk, all dressed in white. I don’t know who was more stunned: the temple workers looking at Alyson or Alyson looking at the temple workers.

”You all look like angels,” she blurted out.  Her best statement came as we started to walk out of the temple. “I felt something in there,“ she said.   She told me in the parking lot that our ride together was the most fascinating one she had in her five weeks of driving for Lyft.  I then asked her to take a photo of me in front of the temple. “I must be the 66th person to do this!“ she said.  She was right.

Game 7

The Washington Nationals lit up the seventh-inning after being behind the entire game and won game seven 6 to 2.  It was the perfect night cap to a great evening at the temple.

The Moral of the Story

  1.  Going to the temple can create missionary opportunities.
  2. Our nonmember friends are allowed to go inside.
  3.  There’s a special feeling inside of a temple.
  4.  People not of our faith can feel it.
  5. God bless his people who go to a temple.
